The inaugural OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is set to begin this weekend in the Solomon Islands. This location is particularly appropriate given the nation’s strong tradition in men’s Futsal. The Solomon Islands hold the record for the most titles in the OFC Futsal Men’s Nations Cup, having won it six times, and they have also participated in four FIFA Futsal World Cups.
In the opening match on Saturday evening, the Fijian team, led by former Solomon Islands futsal international Jerry Sam, will compete against Tahiti. Sam, who currently oversees Fiji’s Futsal and beach soccer initiatives, highlighted the significance of the tournament for advancing women’s Futsal in the region.
“It’s very important that OFC has developed this pathway for women’s Futsal. This first-ever Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is a step forward and something that should continue to inspire more women to join the futsal family,” Sam stated.
Fiji will face Tahiti tomorrow at 6 pm.
