Firefighters continue to put in relentless efforts to combat a bushfire that has rapidly consumed over 74,000 hectares in Victoria’s Grampians/Gariwerd National Park. This fire has drawn significant attention as it threatens several nearby communities, including Pomonal, Moyston, Willaura, Mafeking, and Maroona, leading to emergency warnings currently in effect.
The blaze has expanded dramatically from just 6,000 hectares reported a week ago, according to Luke Heagerty from the State Control Centre, likening its size to that of Singapore. Fortunately, while some structures like sheds and camping facilities have been lost, no homes have been reported destroyed yet.
In response to the fire’s escalation, more than 600 firefighters have dedicated their holiday time, working tirelessly during the Christmas period to safeguard affected communities. As conditions shift, the focus today shifts towards establishing containment lines along the fire’s active edges, aided by a brief respite of cooler weather expected over the next five days.
In a show of solidarity, emergency personnel from various states have flown in to bolster the firefighting efforts, establishing pop-up base camps in Ararat to coordinate their operations. The ground and air crews have been praised for their capable handling of the situation, particularly along the eastern flanks of the fire.
Despite forthcoming cooler conditions, authorities warn that the fire will likely continue to burn for weeks, and with two months of summer remaining, the threat remains significant. Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her gratitude to firefighters for their sacrifice, encouraging the community to heed safety directives during the holiday season.
While the fires have led to power outages for hundreds of residents and disruptions in mobile phone communications due to the destruction of infrastructure, communities are coming together to support one another. Relief centres in Ararat, Stawell, Skipton, and Hamilton are fostering a spirit of unity, as local residents share resources and lend emotional support.
Local businesses are also stepping up to help, with some providing meals for firefighters and opening their doors to anyone in need of a safe space.
This spirit of community resilience and solidarity amidst adversity is heartening, showcasing how people are banding together in difficult times. The hope remains that with continued teamwork and support, the situation can stabilize and lead to recovery for affected residents and areas in the long term.
