Firefighters Shortfall: Recruitment Drive to Address Urgent Need

The National Fire Authority has highlighted a persistent shortage of firefighters across the country. CEO Sowane Puamau announced plans for another recruitment drive scheduled for October, as the current workforce consists of approximately 605 firefighters.

“We will be having another recruit shortly in October. We still have a shortfall of firefighters around the country,” Puamau stated. He also pointed out that financial limitations have restricted their hiring capabilities.

According to Puamau, additional personnel are needed to manage fire categories in key locations such as Suva, Labasa, and Lautoka. “The recruitment of new firefighters depends on the number of fire vehicles we possess and the size of our stations. We have categories A to C, and each category requires more manpower to effectively handle,” he explained.
