Fire Stations Face Scrutiny in Latest NFA Inspections

The National Fire Authority (NFA) has completed its biennial inspections of 19 fire stations across the Central/Eastern, Western, and Northern Divisions, led by Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane.

Levuka and Taveuni are the final two stations awaiting inspection, with Levuka being assessed earlier today.

Last week, Sowane conducted thorough evaluations of fire stations in Korolevu, Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Nabouwalu, Seaqaqa, Labasa, and Savusavu.

During the inspections, Sowane focused on critical areas such as cleanliness, compliance with OSHA regulations, and adherence to the NFA’s 5S principles aimed at enhancing productivity and order in the workplace.

He stressed the importance of strict adherence to disciplinary guidelines and the completion of Required Fitness Level (RFL) exams during his visits.

Additionally, Sowane highlighted the significance of ongoing education and professional development for NFA members, advocating for them to become certified fire engineers through the UK-based Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE).

He expressed a keen interest in addressing the current need for licensed local fire engineers.

Sowane encouraged officers to pursue higher education, noting the Authority’s support through full-time study leave with compensation for at least three personnel currently enrolled in such programs, reflecting NFA’s commitment to continuous learning.

Significant revisions have been made to the NFA’s Human Resources Policy, and officers were informed about the implications of these changes on their roles and responsibilities.

Sowane reiterated the strategic goal of the NFA, which is to reduce structural fires by 5% annually, underscoring its importance in the Authority’s mission.

At each station, he took the opportunity to answer questions and address any concerns raised by the officers.

In concluding his tour, Sowane expressed gratitude to all officers for their unwavering dedication and service, which he acknowledged as fundamental to the NFA’s success in safeguarding communities across Fiji.
