Sakiusa Bolaira, a notable resident of Pacific Harbour, has urged the National Fire Authority (NFA) to reconsider the upcoming closure of the Pacific Harbour Fire Station, effective from July 11, 2025. NFA CEO Puamau Sowane pointed out that the closure is necessary to facilitate developments by Damodar Yatulau PTE Limited, which owns the land where the fire station is located.

In a passionate social media post, Bolaira expressed grave concerns about the closure’s impact on public safety, stating it will place the lives and properties of hundreds at risk, particularly for the traveling public in the area. He highlighted that Pacific Harbour is home to several resorts, popular eateries, and a bustling community, further emphasizing the need for immediate fire response capabilities.

Bolaira, also known for his role as a former President of the Pacific Harbour Volunteers Firefighters Brigade, outlined the urgent services provided by the fire station, which include responding to fires and motor vehicle accidents, as well as conducting evacuations during natural disasters. His concerns echo those expressed in previous discussions about the NFA’s need for expanded services and resources to manage growing populations and increased infrastructure.

The CEO of NFA had previously highlighted the need for adapting fire service boundaries to accommodate the rapid urban growth seen across Fiji, indicating that many communities currently remain outside the fire levy system established years ago. Recent initiatives have seen major expansions and the establishment of new fire stations to improve the emergency response infrastructure, all of which underscore an ongoing evolution in emergency services to keep pace with new developments.

In light of Bolaira’s call to action, one can hope that this situation leads not only to a reevaluation of the fire station closure but also to a potential strengthening of community fire safety initiatives, which ultimately would protect more residents and businesses throughout the Pacific Harbour area. The ongoing discussion holds promise for catalyzing proactive efforts toward a better-equipped fire service capable of meeting the demands of a growing population.
