The National Fire Authority (NFA) has concluded its investigation into two significant fire incidents that occurred this year. Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane announced that the fire at the Old CWM Birthing Unit on Amy Street in Suva, which took place on June 7, has been classified as an incendiary fire, meaning it was intentionally set. This tragic incident led to complete destruction of the building, with damages estimated at around $80,000.

In a separate case, the NFA determined that the fire at the Rups Big Bear warehouse on Grantham Road in Raiwaqa was caused by an electrical fault. This fire also resulted in total structural damage, with the estimated cost of damages reaching about $1.2 million.

These investigations highlight the critical importance of fire safety and the need for homeowners and business owners to take preventive measures seriously. Sowane has emphasized the need for regular electrical inspections and prompted residents to report fire hazards promptly.

Reflecting on recent trends, fire-related damages across the nation have significantly increased, raising concerns about compliance with fire safety regulations. The NFA has been proactive in addressing these issues by promoting fire safety awareness and encouraging communities to engage in safety education, thus working to foster a culture of preparedness against fire risks.

Efforts to improve awareness are ongoing, and there’s hope that with continued advocacy and community engagement, the incidence of such devastating fires can be reduced in the future. By prioritizing fire safety and community preparedness, residents can collectively work towards creating a safer environment for all.
