The National Fire Authority (NFA) has issued a warning about fire safety following the report of three house fires in just the first three days of 2025. CEO Puamau Sowane emphasized the importance of securing properties before leaving home to prevent such incidents, highlighting that many homes are often unoccupied during fires. This concern echoes previous warnings shared during the festive season, where an increase in fires has typically been observed.
The NFA urges residents to inform neighbors or family members when they leave home, even briefly, as quicker responses are crucial for limiting damage and saving lives. In a stark contrast to last New Year’s activity, which saw only one fire reported in the equivalent period, Sowane noted that January last year saw a total of 19 residential fires, causing damages of approximately $2.02 million.
To combat unwanted fires, Sowane recommended simple preventive practices: properly storing flammable items, keeping matches out of children’s reach, turning off electrical appliances, and closing gas cylinders before leaving the premises. He reiterated the NFA’s goal to reduce fires by 5% each year and acknowledged the vital role that community cooperation plays in achieving this aim.
This message reflects a broader trend regarding fire safety, particularly during times of high activity such as holidays. The proactive involvement of the community can help reduce the number of fire-related incidents and foster a safer environment. Despite the early reports of fires this year, there is hope that through shared vigilance and improved safety practices, the community can look forward to a safer and more secure year ahead.
Summary: The NFA has reported three house fires in early 2025, urging the public to secure their homes and inform others when leaving. With a goal to reduce fire incidences by 5% annually, community cooperation is essential for enhancing safety measures.
