Fire Destroys Family Home, Leaving Them Homeless: What Happened?

A family in Koroqaqa, located along Baulevu Road outside Nausori Town, has lost their home to a fire that broke out Wednesday morning. According to the National Fire Authority (NFA), the fire originated from the storage area. The homeowner initially attempted to extinguish the flames with a garden hose, but the fire spread rapidly, forcing the family to flee.

The NFA estimated that the damage to the four-bedroom house amounts to between $80,000 and $90,000. Fire crews from the Nausori and Nakasi fire stations responded to the incident around 6 am. At the time of the fire, the 31-year-old homeowner, a taxi driver, was at home with his wife, two children, and mother.

The NFA has initiated investigations into the cause of the fire. Puamau Sowane, the NFA’s chief executive officer, expressed concern regarding the increasing number of residential fires. He announced that they are enhancing their Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework, which is a training program offered free to local communities. This two-week intensive program focuses on firefighting skills, fire prevention, basic first aid, and emergency response.
