The Fiji Performing Rights Association (FIPRA) Awards are making a much-anticipated comeback after a three-year hiatus, scheduled for May 9. This revival indicates a fresh start for FIPRA, an organization dedicated to promoting Fijian culture and language amid modern challenges.
Chairman Isireli Gumatua expressed enthusiasm about the awards during a recent press conference, describing their return as a central element of FIPRA’s strategic plan. “The return of FIPRA Music Awards is a key part of that strategic plan,” Gumatua stated. He emphasized the importance of renewal and growth, highlighting a commitment to acknowledging and celebrating emerging talents among composers and music creators.
A notable addition to this year’s event is the introduction of the Best Sigi Drigi Award, which reflects FIPRA’s dedication to safeguarding and promoting the Fijian language, storytelling, and traditional musical expressions. This new category signifies a deeper emphasis on cultural heritage.
FIPRA officials also addressed concerns about the integration of artificial intelligence in music creation, noting that they are actively working on developing a policy related to this evolving field. “The board is finding a solution at the moment, how we can collaborate AI music with the original composers; we’re still looking into that,” they stated, demonstrating a commitment to navigate the challenges posed by rapidly advancing technology while supporting authentic cultural creations.
The awards will be overseen by a new leadership team featuring three fresh board members and a newly appointed general manager. They are considering shifting the traditional awards venue away from the Grand Pacific Hotel to invigorate the ceremony’s atmosphere.
Applications for the 15 award categories are now open to FIPRA members for songs released in 2025. The submission window, which is only three weeks long and closes on February 27, is necessary to facilitate the judging process and public nominations on social media, as well as ensure a smooth run-up to the awards night.
This revival of the FIPRA Awards encapsulates hope and progress, focusing on nurturing the next generation of Fijian artists while honoring the rich cultural tapestry of the nation.
