Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has challenged claims from Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube and other politicians, expressing confusion about their assertion that the Government is powerless in addressing the rising cost of living.
In response to Narube’s criticism of the Government for focusing on salary hikes while ordinary citizens struggle with living expenses, Professor Prasad highlighted that the economy is experiencing robust growth of approximately 3.8 percent, with inflation showing a downward trend. He pointed to increased investments, flourishing businesses, and a thriving tourism sector as indicators of economic improvement.
Narube, however, voiced concerns regarding the Government’s purported failure to effectively tackle issues such as the inflated cost of living, systemic corruption, the escalating drug crisis, and mounting national debt. He emphasized that the minister’s remarks following public expectations were misguided, given the significant challenges faced by the populace.
Professor Prasad rebutted Narube’s claims by stating that the Government is actively working on solutions to these pressing issues, including the establishment of the Narcotics Bureau to combat the drug epidemic and collaborative efforts to foster awareness and treatment strategies. He urged Narube and his peers to present viable solutions rather than making what he called unfounded accusations against the Government.
The Minister also cited improvements in income levels and living standards, emphasizing an increased commitment to prioritizing health, infrastructure, and agriculture.
This dialogue showcases the ongoing political discourse surrounding economic management and the government’s role in addressing the cost of living crisis. As the economy continues to grow and investments rise, there is hope for lasting improvements in the quality of life for citizens. The Government’s proactive approach in addressing drug-related issues and its focus on enhancing living conditions reflects its dedication to creating a more prosperous society.
Ultimately, this situation underscores the importance of cooperation and constructive dialogue in politics as the pursuit of effective governance continues.
