The Fiji Airways men’s 7s team for the HSBC Perth 7s tournament will be finalized next weekend, following the conclusion of the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament in Sigatoka. Head coach Osea Kolinisau announced that no player has guaranteed his position in the final lineup.
During a training session at Bidesi Park in Suva, Kolinisau emphasized that all players, including those competing for Mike Friday’s Select 7s team, are in contention for the final roster. He stated, “Everybody is up for selection… so nobody has cemented his place yet.” Following the Coral Coast 7s, the team will travel to Perth on the following Monday.
Kolinisau, who captained Fiji to a gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, will focus on various crucial aspects for player selection. “I’m looking at the boys being fit going to Perth. We want to improve our defense, especially in the closing moments of a game.” He underscored the importance of communication, positioning, and decision-making during critical seconds in matches, advising the players to adhere to their established processes even when fatigued.
In Mike Friday’s Select 7s team, players such as Lasaro Bogisa, Manueli Maisamoa, Iowane Teba, Jope Tikomailepanoni, Iliavi Masori, Pilipo Bukayaro, Rauto Vakadranu, Ilikimi Torosi, and Jerry Tuwai will participate. The rest of the squad will also showcase their skills for the Fiji 7s team.
Fiji will compete in pool MA alongside New Zealand 7s 2, Tuva Rugby, and Brothers. The Coral Coast 7s tournament is set to take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park.
This upcoming tournament provides excellent opportunities for players to showcase their talents and secure their spots on the national team. The rigorous selection process under Kolinisau’s guidance ensures that Fiji is well-prepared for success in the HSBC Perth 7s.
