The Fiji Muslim League (FML) has announced that the late boxer Ubayd Haider will receive his final rites tomorrow evening. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Raralevu cemetery in Nausori at 8:30 PM.
Ubayd Haider, who was previously known as Nathan Singh, tragically lost to Australia-based boxer Runqi Zhou by technical knockout during their IBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title bout on October 26. Following the match, the 25-year-old collapsed and was promptly taken to Lautoka Aspen Hospital, where he remained until his untimely death the following day.
This unfortunate event has drawn attention to the risks associated with professional sports, particularly in contact sports like boxing. While this serves as a somber reminder of the physical toll such contests can take on athletes, it is also an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance of a young talent whose life was cut short.
In a time of grief, the boxing community and fans can honor Ubayd Haider’s legacy by celebrating his dedication to the sport and the impact he had in his brief career. The final rites will not only be a farewell but also a moment for reflection on the passion that drives athletes to pursue their dreams, even in the face of danger.
