National Under-20 head coach Senirusi Seruvakula is set to announce the final 30-member squad at the end of January. The team is gearing up for two important tournaments scheduled in New Zealand in March: the Oceania Championship and the Super U20 competition.
Seruvakula highlighted that most of the players in the extended squad were chosen based on their performances in last year’s Vodafone Deans Trophy competition. There has also been significant interest from overseas-based players, with several already training with the squad.
“The focus will primarily be on these two tournaments,” Seruvakula remarked. “During the Oceania tournament, we will represent the national U20 side, and for the Super Rugby U20 competition, we will compete as the Drua U20 team.” The Oceania competition will include teams from Tonga, Samoa, and Moana Pasifika.
The team will depart in the last week of February, with the Oceania tournament set to kick off in the first week of March. Following a brief break of three days, the team will dive into the Super U20 tournament, which will last approximately one and a half weeks.
To finalize the roster, Seruvakula and his coaching staff will be holding open trials in Duva, Sigatoka, and Nadi on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, respectively.
This initiative underscores the commitment to nurturing young talent in the sport and the anticipation of showcasing potential at an international level. With dedicated preparation and a focus on inclusivity, the upcoming tournaments offer a promising opportunity for the team to shine on the global stage.
