Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad has sent a strong message to the youth of Fiji, calling on them to reject drug use and take charge of their futures. In a speech addressing the rising concerns regarding drug abuse among young people, he announced a $10 million budget aimed at tackling HIV, drug abuse, and associated social challenges.

Prasad emphasized the grave consequences of drug use, noting that it not only jeopardizes personal health but also has devastating effects on families, communities, and the nation as a whole. He stated, “Getting into drugs means you are destroying yourself, your parents, your village, your settlement, your communities, and your country. This is a menace that we must all fight together.”

Education was highlighted as a pivotal tool in the fight against substance abuse. The Deputy Prime Minister urged students to make wise choices for their well-being and encouraged families to remain vigilant, supporting the youth in resisting the temptations of drugs. He underscored that the issue of drug abuse poses a significant national security threat, undermining the social fabric and potential of Fiji.

Recent statistics reflect a troubling increase in drug-related incidents among students, with substances like methamphetamine, cannabis, tobacco, and alcohol becoming more prevalent in educational institutions. In response, authorities are intensifying their focus on combating drug trafficking, supplemented by counseling and mentoring initiatives for at-risk youth.

Similar sentiments were echoed in previous messages delivered by Professor Prasad, where he consistently called for collective action and community involvement to foster a healthier, drug-free environment. In these previous speeches, he warned that drug abuse is a national crisis that requires a united front from both the government and citizens.

As these initiatives gain momentum, there is hope that with collective efforts from all sectors—education, law enforcement, and family support—Fiji can create a safer environment that empowers the younger generation to make better choices and build brighter futures. The drive to combat drug abuse signifies a commitment to fostering a healthy and resilient society, reinforcing the vital importance of collaboration in overcoming this prevalent threat.
