The Eco Guardians of Fiji, in conjunction with the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Health, conducted a significant clean-up campaign targeting 14 communities in Lami amid a dengue outbreak. Approximately 300 youth volunteers rallied to participate in this initiative, underlining the community’s commitment to combatting the spread of dengue, particularly in identified hot spots.
Assistant Minister Sakiusa Tubuna emphasized the campaign as a crucial opportunity for residents to take charge of their environment and safeguard their health from diseases like dengue, which has been exacerbated by indiscriminate rubbish dumping that creates mosquito breeding areas. Tubuna noted that ongoing clean-up efforts are essential for removing waste and disrupting potential mosquito habitats.
After the clean-up, a volleyball tournament was held at Jonney Singh Park, fostering community spirit and engaging local youth positively. Tubuna highlighted the importance of involving Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to continuously support such activities, which not only deter youth from illegal activities but promote teamwork and community pride.
The communities involved in the clean-up included Waikerekere, Wailekutu, Wainigasau, and others, showing a broad commitment across the region to enhance local environments and health.
This clean-up campaign reflects similar initiatives throughout Fiji, where community participation has been vital in addressing health issues like dengue fever, as seen in recent efforts in areas such as Lautoka and Davuilevu. Past clean-up campaigns have successfully mobilized residents, demonstrated the importance of public health awareness, and reinforced the need for community responsibility in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Overall, the collaborative spirit witnessed in these efforts is a positive indication that as communities unite to tackle such health challenges, a cleaner and healthier future is achievable. The proactive measures taken by the Eco Guardians and local volunteers provide hope that sustained action can significantly reduce the risks associated with dengue and enhance overall community well-being.
