The President of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP), Joe Dimuri, recently underscored the significant impact of youth on Fiji’s political environment during the PAP Special Youth Assembly General Meeting held at the Suva Civic Auditorium. The meeting witnessed a substantial turnout, reflecting the increasing engagement of young voters.
Mr. Dimuri emphasized the inherent power of youth within the political framework, stating, “It’s often said that politics is power. Power is achieved by numbers and must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with the rule of law. In democratic settings, it’ll forever be a game of numbers.” He pointed out that the demographic of youth aged 18-35 comprises the largest group of voters, which designates them as vital “kingmakers” in any election.
With the robust participation observed at the event, Mr. Dimuri expressed his confidence that young voters now recognize their pivotal role in shaping the nation’s political future. He noted, “The turnout was an explicit reflection of their unwavering confidence in the party, its leadership, and what it stands for.”
Acknowledging the previous elections where youth voter turnout was disappointingly low, Mr. Dimuri expressed optimism that the upcoming 26th General Election would see a marked change. He remarked that many had underestimated young voters’ interest, but their presence at the assembly dispelled that notion.
He also highlighted that the influence of youth goes beyond merely casting votes. Their potential as active participants on the campaign trail is invaluable, he asserted. As the party’s National President, Mr. Dimuri expressed a strong belief that with the renewed enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated at the assembly, the PAP would achieve significantly improved results in the forthcoming elections.
The renewed engagement of Fiji’s youth in politics illustrates a hopeful trend towards a more active and informed citizenry, capable of driving meaningful change in their democratic processes.
