The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School Under-15 rugby team recently drew the attention of Fiji Bati Head Coach Wise Kativerata during the Vodafone Eastern Zone Secondary School League matches at Saint Marcelin Primary School. The team showcased their talent with a notable 20-0 victory against Nasinu Secondary School.

Coach Kativerata expressed enthusiasm for the continuous improvement in the standard of rugby he has witnessed each year. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the national governing body and local schools to properly assess the needs of players and coaches, which is vital for their development.

Furthermore, Kativerata highlighted the importance of establishing a robust foundation in schools as part of a long-term vision aimed at creating a well-structured academy system. This vision resonates deeply with MGM’s recent accomplishments in youth rugby and highlights a commitment to nurturing young talent within Fiji’s rugby arena.

In addition, MGM has made significant strides in various age categories, recently reaching the quarterfinals of the national Vodafone Deans under-18 competition after a hard-fought victory against Suva Grammar School. Team manager Hotashwar Padarath noted that achieving such milestones has engendered a sense of pride and motivation among the players as they look to build on their recent successes.

As investment in youth rugby continues to rise and the focus on developing strong academies intensifies, there is genuine optimism for the future of rugby in Fiji. The active involvement of coaches like Kativerata indicates that the system is progressing in a positive direction, fostering the growth of aspiring athletes throughout the country. This supportive environment bodes well for the future, as it encourages the development of the next generation of rugby stars.
