Fiji’s iTAUKEI Affairs Minister, Ifereimi Vasu, has highlighted a troubling increase in drug abuse, particularly among the youth. During a recent meeting of the Macuata Provincial Council held in Sasa Village, Minister Vasu emphasized the importance of strengthening family structures as a critical strategy to combat this growing social challenge.
He expressed concerns over related issues such as rising rates of teenage pregnancies, HIV infections, school dropouts, and violence against women. The minister noted that many young individuals are turning to rehabilitation centers like St Giles, which has reported a significant uptick in admissions, indicating the urgent need for intervention.
According to Vasu, enhancing family support systems can tackle the underlying issues that contribute to drug abuse and other social problems. “The family unit plays a crucial role in helping them stay on the right path,” he stated. Emphasizing family as a foundational aspect of societal well-being, he believes that by focusing on strengthening family ties, PNG can make strides in addressing these pressing issues.
In summary, the Fiji government recognizes the deep-rooted connection between family strength and the well-being of its youth. With a united effort to fortify familial bonds, there is hope for a positive change in the trajectory of drug abuse and related social ills in the country.
This initiative also presents an opportunity for community engagement and education, as involving families may create a supportive environment for young people, fostering resilience against substance abuse.
