Youth homelessness in Fiji is an escalating concern, with increasing numbers of children and young adults facing life on the streets. Independent MP Alipate Tuicolo voiced this pressing issue during a recent speech in Parliament, emphasizing the urgent need for action and highlighting contributing factors such as marriage breakdowns and instances of abuse.
Tuicolo commended the Ministry of Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation for their ongoing initiatives alongside various Non-Governmental Organizations, including Aruka Fiji, Child Benefit Fiji, and Inspire Pacific. These organizations, along with youth groups, play vital roles in offering support to those affected by homelessness.
The MP raised important questions about the responsibility for vulnerable children in cases of familial strife. He referred to traditional cultural practices in his community, specifically pointing out that maternal uncles are expected to take charge of children when marriages fail, ensuring they remain cared for and supported. He argued that, according to these customs, no child from his community should end up homeless.
Highlighting his commitment to addressing this crisis, Tuicolo offered to assist in identifying any homeless youth needing help, stating he would gladly provide shelter and care. He called for collaboration between traditional leaders and community members, alongside government efforts, to combat youth homelessness more effectively.
The gravity of this issue is echoed in insights from prior reports, including those from Minister Lynda Tabuya, who has linked the rise of homeless children to familial pressures, substance abuse, and neglect. Her establishment of a Taskforce aims to investigate these root causes, demonstrating governmental acknowledgment and proactive measures to address child homelessness.
