The Alliance for Future Generations has publicly supported the creation of Fiji’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Litiana Lagibalavu, a representative of the Alliance, highlighted that the TRC is a vital opportunity to confront historical injustices and pave the way for a more inclusive and fair future.
“As young individuals, we are keenly aware of the influence that history has on our present,” stated Ms. Lagibalavu. She noted the reality of inter-generational trauma, which impacts social interactions, perceptions of one’s societal role, and responses to various challenges.
Referencing trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté, Ms. Lagibalavu explained that trauma is not just a byproduct of external events, but also an internal experience stemming from those events. She underscored that the lingering effects of colonization, displacement, and cultural loss continue to shape the realities and perspectives of young Fijians.
Ms. Lagibalavu sees the TRC as a crucial initiative to address and comprehend this enduring pain, with the goal of promoting healing for both current and future generations. “The Truth and Reconciliation Commission offers us a platform to confront and understand this pain and begin the healing process for ourselves and for generations to come.”
She emphasized that, as the youth of Fiji, there are concerns about the potential independence and impartiality of the Commission. In response, Sashi Kiran, Chair of the TRC and Assistant Minister for Women, confirmed that once the TRC is approved by the Cabinet and officially established, it will operate independently and without bias from the current government.
