Sergeant Zaira Begg, a former titleholder of Miss Fiji from Ba, has made history as the youngest member of the latest contingent sent to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This group, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Aseri Nakibo, recently departed for their mission, which notably includes six women among the fourteen members—a significant achievement that reflects the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to increasing female representation in international deployments.
At just 28 years old, Sgt. Begg, who serves in the Community Policing Department at the Fiji Police Academy, expressed that her selection for this mission is a remarkable indication of God’s guidance in her life. “A decade ago, while volunteering with the Fiji Red Cross Society, I dreamed of making a difference in war-torn areas. Today, I am honored to serve with the Fiji Police Force in South Sudan, and I attribute my journey to God’s glory,” she remarked.
She also conveyed her enthusiasm and eagerness to learn from the experienced officers in her team, highlighting their role in mentoring her throughout this venture. She extended her gratitude to God, the Fiji Police Force for fostering opportunities for young women, and her family and community in Ba for their unwavering support.
This inspiring story showcases not only personal achievement but also the increasing involvement of women in peacekeeping roles, which can positively impact global efforts for stability and security. Zaira’s journey exemplifies the potential of young women to lead and make a difference on the world stage.
