Sergeant Zaira Begg, a former titleholder of the Miss Fiji beauty pageant from Ba, has become a notable figure as the youngest member of the latest contingent representing Fiji in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This contingent, under the leadership of Senior Superintendent of Police Aseri Nakibo, recently departed for their assignment, marking a significant milestone in women’s representation within the Fiji Police Force with six out of fourteen members being women.
At just 28 years old, Sgt. Begg is currently with the Community Policing Department at the Fiji Police Academy. She views her selection for this mission as a remarkable fulfillment of her aspirations and a manifestation of her faith. Reflecting on her journey, she mentioned a decade of volunteering with the Fiji Red Cross Society while harboring dreams of serving in conflict zones. Today, she is ready to embark on what she describes as an extraordinary journey with the Fiji Police Force in South Sudan, attributing her success to divine guidance.
Her enthusiasm is palpable as she expresses her gratitude, acknowledging the wealth of experience present within the contingent. Sgt. Begg aims to glean wisdom from her senior colleagues, who stand ready to mentor her throughout this mission. Additionally, she extends heartfelt thanks to God, her family in Ba, and the Fiji Police Force for their support in empowering women to take on such vital roles in international operations.
This development not only highlights Sgt. Begg’s personal achievements but also underscores the progress being made in promoting gender equality within Fiji’s law enforcement agencies. The involvement of women in peacekeeping missions is a positive step toward strengthening community ties and enhancing global security.
Ultimately, this mission presents a unique opportunity for Sgt. Begg and her peers to make a meaningful impact in South Sudan, serving as role models for aspiring young women across Fiji and beyond. Their dedication and courage can inspire future generations to pursue careers in public service and international relations.
