Thirteen-year-old Grace Khelan has made history for schools swimming in Fiji by earning a bronze medal in the 50-meter butterfly at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships. Her achievement comes as she represents Fiji among a squad of 62 swimmers participating in the competitive five-day event at the Sleelam Sports Complex in Chandler, Brisbane.
Khelan competed against top swimmers from various Australian regions, including New South Wales, ACT, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria, and Queensland. Her mother, Sereana Heritage, credits Khelan’s success to her disciplined training with the Suva-based Orca Club, under the guidance of head coach Esther Malani.
The Fiji Schools Swimming Team, coached by Salaseini Lele from Lautoka, has noted a significant increase in squad size this year compared to previous years. Lele emphasized that after a successful campaign at the recent mini games in Palau, this championship serves as vital exposure for young Fijian swimmers as they prepare for the Pacific Games set for 2027.
All participants are self-funded, adding a layer of commitment to the endeavor. Lele further commented that this competition allows the swimmers to benchmark against some of Australia’s best, encouraging them to push beyond their limits and achieve faster times.
The team comprises 42 male and 20 female swimmers from both primary and secondary schools, ranging in ages from 13 to 18 years, who secured their spots through the Fiji Schools Swimming Championships held in late May.
This drive towards excellence within Fiji’s swimming community is reflected in the increasing participation and dedication from young athletes. With continued support, this indicates a promising future for Fijian swimmers on an international stage. Their efforts not only spotlight individual achievements but also sculpt a sense of community spirit, motivating the next generation to pursue success in sports.
