Fiji’s Young Sprinter Aims for Glory at Upcoming Finals

Iowane Laselevu is determined to win a medal at the Fiji Finals set to take place from April 24-26. The talented athlete from Lomary Secondary School triumphed in the senior boys’ 800 meters during the Suva Zone Two competition. Laselevu, who comes from Galoa in Serua and has maternal connections to Namosi, expressed pride in defeating top competitors from Suva Grammar School and Marist Brothers High School during the event.

“I did not want to regard anybody else; I only prayed to God to help me through this event,” Laselevu shared. Although he had primarily focused on rugby league, he made a swift transition to athletics after his rugby team faced defeat the previous week. Just two days before the competition, he was encouraged to participate, despite his experience in the 400 meters during last year’s zone meet, where he did not advance to the finals.

Laselevu’s experience aligns with that of other young athletes in Fiji, such as Jared Ma’afu Levai, who recently celebrated his victory in the 100 meters at an inter-house competition. Both athletes are part of a growing movement within the country that emphasizes not only competition but also camaraderie and mutual support among young competitors. Levai has noted the importance of family and community in his training, a sentiment echoed by Laselevu’s quick pivot to athletics.

This collective ambition to excel is reflective of a broader trend in Fijian athletics, as seen in the recent Suva Zone athletics competition, where numerous athletes, including Salanieta Vakaloloma from Nabua Secondary School, have showcased remarkable performances while aspiring to qualify for the highly anticipated Fiji Finals. The positive atmosphere cultivated in these events continues to inspire young athletes across the nation, fueling their hopes for future successes.

With Laselevu’s resolve and commitment to his goal, there’s potential for an encouraging result at the upcoming finals. The fostering of sportsmanship and community support among these young athletes promises a bright and inspiring future for athletics in Fiji.
