Four young sailors from Fiji are proudly showcasing their skills at the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship in Brisbane, Australia, which commenced on January 14 and will conclude on January 17. This event marks an important milestone for Kele Hunter (15), Paul Haynes (13), Malia Sukanavanua (13), and Ayana Hussain (13), as they make their international sailing debut.

The sailors were selected for the team following their performance at the Fiji National Sailing Championships. Vili Ratulu, a former Fijian Olympic representative and a development officer for the Fiji Yachting Association (FYA), shared that the selection process also considered the sailors’ ability to contribute towards covering the costs, as the grant provided does not fully fund their participation.

“It is essential that the sailors contribute, even if it is a small amount, to make this opportunity feasible,” Ratulu explained. The team’s participation came after an invitation from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, demonstrating the international interest in Fiji’s sailing sports.

Team members have trained diligently in Fiji for this competition, but the championship presents unique challenges as it is their first experience racing against numerous competitors from different countries. While the young sailors are feeling a bit nervous, Ratulu assures that this experience is invaluable for their development. “Sailing teaches essential skills and can open up career opportunities on yachts or superyachts,” he noted, highlighting that for some members, this trip is their first experience flying.

The goal for the Fijian team is straightforward: “We want all four sailors to complete the races and place well,” Ratulu stated. This competition represents an essential step for these young athletes and a chance to strengthen Fiji’s ties in the sailing community, ultimately contributing to the sport’s growth back home.

This story is not just about competition; it reflects the spirit of determination and growth among young athletes. Their participation can inspire further interest in sailing within Fiji, offering hope for a brighter future within the sport. As they embark on this exciting journey, these young sailors embody resilience and the pursuit of dreams, setting a positive example for aspiring athletes in Fiji and beyond.
