Four young sailors from Fiji are currently participating in the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship in Brisbane, Australia. The competition began on January 14 and is set to conclude on January 17. This event is particularly significant for Kele Hunter (15), Paul Haynes (13), Malia Sukanavanua (13), and Ayana Hussain (13), as it marks their international sailing debut.
These talented sailors were chosen to represent Fiji following their impressive performances at the Fiji National Sailing Championships. Vili Ratulu, a former Olympian and development officer for the Fiji Yachting Association (FYA), explained that their selection was based not only on skill but also on their ability to assist with funding, as the grant received does not cover all expenses. Ratulu stated, “The grant doesn’t cover everything, so the sailors had to contribute.”
The opportunity for the team arose after the FYA received an invitation from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, highlighting the international interest in fostering sailing talent from Fiji. With government financial support making their trip possible, the young sailors are now able to showcase their skills on this global stage.
Having trained intensively in Fiji, the sailors are facing the challenge of competing against many international participants for the first time. While there are nerves, Ratulu emphasized the invaluable experience this competition offers. “Sailing teaches essential skills and can lead to jobs on yachts or superyachts,” he noted. For two of the sailors, this is also their first journey by plane, making this whole experience a significant milestone.
The team has set a straightforward and motivational goal: “We want all four sailors to complete the races and place well,” Ratulu said. Their participation not only represents a major step in their sailing careers but also aims to enhance Fiji’s presence in the international sailing community, potentially leading to increased interest in the sport back home.
This event serves as a testament to the dedication and resilience of young athletes. Their journey is an inspiring example of how pursuing passions can open doors to new opportunities and foster connections within the global sporting community. With each race completed, these young sailors are not only crafting their futures but also helping to elevate the profile of sailing in Fiji, encouraging others to follow in their wake.
