The Fiji Outrigger Va’a Canoe racing team is preparing to build a strong lineup for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games scheduled to take place in Palau this July. Recently, a regatta at the USP lower campus foreshore saw seven clubs competing in various race categories, serving as the first trials in the lead-up to the Mini Games.
A press release from Fiji Outrigger highlighted that this year’s race calendar will provide athletes with multiple opportunities to exhibit their skills across different distances and categories, progressing towards national trials and club championships. Notably, the Mini Games squad must comprise at least 50 percent junior paddlers under the age of 19, which has galvanized young athletes to vie for positions on the national team.
Particularly keen are the junior paddlers from Tafaga, who are excited about competing in a variety of categories to contribute to their club’s success. Coach Stanley Ohms, who also leads the Fiji Va’a national team, expressed optimism about the team’s capabilities. He praised the athletes for their focus and dedication while highlighting the promising potential of junior paddlers.
Ohms stated, “The athletes are focused and dedicated. We have a solid group of juniors coming through, and I am confident we will see strong performances at the Mini Games in Palau.”
As the team continues to train and prepare, there is a hopeful sentiment surrounding their upcoming performances. The commitment of both junior and senior paddlers bodes well for Fiji’s representation at the Mini Games, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent in maintaining the future success of the sport.
