Team Fiji concluded the 2024 Paris Olympics with one silver medal, finishing in 74th place in the overall medal standings. The medal was secured by the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team, who suffered a 28-7 defeat against the host nation, France.
Many of the athletes who represented Fiji were first-time Olympians, most of whom are under 20 years of age. They expressed pride in competing on such a prestigious stage and are now focused on improving their performance in hopes of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
In a heartwarming event, Team Fiji athletes and officials were treated to a dinner hosted by members of the Fijian community in Paris. Linda and Eric Acker, along with Atonina and Fero Lasagavibau and Joe Rokocoko, organized the gathering and presented a traditional sevusevu to the team.
Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission, Sale Sorovaki, expressed gratitude to the hosts for their efforts in making the team feel welcomed and comfortable. He noted the athletes’ excitement to enjoy Fijian cuisine and bond with fellow Fijians in Paris.
Linda Acker shared her emotional experience, stating it was a privilege to host the young Fijian Olympians. Former All Black Joe Rokocoko emphasized the significance of the gathering for the Fijian community, describing it as a small gesture of appreciation for the remarkable group of young athletes representing Fiji on the Olympic stage.
