Defence and discipline are primary concerns for the Flying Fijians as they prepare to face Samoa in the opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This was emphasized by team captain Tevita Ikanivere, who highlighted the importance of staying focused throughout the game.
Ikanivere, a 24-year-old hooker, expressed to SUNsports that the team needs to remain alert at all times. “There is a saying that goes only good enough if we do the work,” he remarked.
He also encouraged fans to come out in support of the revamped Flying Fijians squad. “I’m up for the challenge and I thank God for choosing me as captain to carry out this responsibility,” Ikanivere stated.
Expecting a challenging match against Samoa, he acknowledged the team’s youth but noted the presence of numerous leaders, which eases his responsibilities both on and off the field. “We are a young team but there are lots of leaders in this team, which makes my work easier because everyone takes care of themselves,” he added.
Following two rigorous training sessions, Ikanivere confirmed that the team is aiming for a victory in their first match of the tournament, which is scheduled to kick off at 6pm.
