Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student at Queen Victoria School, is thrilled to represent Fiji at the upcoming 2025 Asian Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) scheduled for January 17-20 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This prestigious event gathers youth leaders from across the globe, providing a valuable platform for discussing and addressing pressing world issues.
For Sakiusa, this opportunity marks a significant milestone as it is his first experience representing Fiji in such an international forum. The student from Tabuya, Nabukelevu-ira, Kadavu expressed his excitement, stating, “This is a huge breakthrough for me. To be selected out of thousands of participants and to be around other people and share thoughts and opinions is phenomenal.”
His selection was based on a compelling essay he wrote, which addressed various social challenges faced in Fiji, including domestic violence, the rise of drug-related issues, and the erosion of cultural identity. He articulated how participating in the International MUN conference would help him grow into a productive and inspiring leader.
To facilitate this journey, Sakiusa’s parents contributed financially, covering the cost of his hotel, transportation, and food, totaling U.S.$779 (FJ$1785). Upon returning from the conference, Sakiusa plans to pursue studies in medicine, with a focus on non-communicable diseases.
This event not only highlights the talent and potential of young individuals like Sakiusa but also emphasizes the importance of youth engagement in global conversations. It is encouraging to see young leaders stepping forward to voice their insights on critical issues and work toward solutions for their communities and the world.
Summary: Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student at Queen Victoria School, will represent Fiji at AYIMUN 2025 in Malaysia, addressing social issues and aspiring to develop as a leader while preparing for a future career in medicine.
