The Digicel Fiji Young Kulas under-20 women’s football team is preparing to compete against some of the best teams globally at the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Despite the daunting challenge posed by top-ranked teams like Brazil, Canada, and France, head coach Angeline Chua and her squad remain confident.
Chua recognizes the difficulties ahead but is focused on maintaining a positive outlook for the team’s preparation and players’ mindset. The main objective is to present the distinct Fijian style of football on an international platform.
Chua believes their underdog status could play in their favor, suggesting that the lack of pressure allows the team to concentrate on delivering their best performance while proudly representing Fiji. She stated, “We expect to be seen as underdogs in the pool, which means we don’t have any pressure. Our aim is to showcase Fiji and its talent in all three of our matches.”
Currently, the team is in the United States participating in warm-up matches against three universities, followed by plans to travel to Costa Rica for additional friendly games. Their first pool match in the FIFA World Cup is scheduled against Brazil on September 1.
In spite of the challenging competition, the Fiji under-20 women’s football team is determined to overcome the odds and demonstrate their capabilities on the world stage.
