Fiji’s Young Kulas Set to Challenge the Giants at FIFA World Cup

The Digicel Fiji Young Kulas under-20 women’s team is preparing to compete against some of the world’s top teams at the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Despite the challenge of facing strong opponents like Brazil, Canada, and France, all ranked in the top 10 globally, head coach Angeline Chua and her players are confident and ready to take on the challenge.

Chua recognizes the difficulty of the task ahead, but is resolved not to let it affect the preparation or the mindset of her players. The primary focus for the team is to present the distinct Fijian style of football on the international stage.

Chua believes that being perceived as underdogs in their group may even work to their advantage, as it alleviates pressure and allows the team to focus on delivering their best performances while representing Fiji with pride.

“And then, of course, we expect to be like the underdogs in the pool. So, I think for us, we don’t have any pressure,” Chua stated. “We want to showcase Fiji and the talent in Fiji. And, of course, to play our best in all three games.”

Currently, the team is in the United States for practice matches against three universities and will later head to Costa Rica for more friendly games. Their first match in the FIFA World Cup will be against Brazil, scheduled for September 1.

Despite the formidable competition ahead, the Fiji under-20 women’s football team is determined to defy expectations and demonstrate their capabilities on the world stage.
