Fiji’s Young Kulas Learn Lessons in Defeat Ahead of World Cup Showdown

The Digicel Fiji Young Kulas faced a 2-0 defeat against a highly organized Costa Rican team this morning, as they prepare for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Costa Rica, currently ranked 42nd in the world, gradually seized control of the match, scoring the first goal in the 41st minute to lead 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Costa Rica extended their lead with another goal from a corner kick, while Fiji, ranked 72nd, found it difficult to create significant scoring opportunities. Fiji’s best chances arose from set pieces, including a notable free kick that tested the Costa Rican defense.

Head coach Angeline Chua highlighted the importance of this game for her team’s growth. “Playing against Costa Rica provided us with an opportunity to experience a different style of play and pinpoint areas for improvement ahead of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Although we didn’t get the desired result, the exposure to such high-quality opponents will greatly benefit our players,” she stated.

The Young Kulas will now shift their attention to their next friendly match against Morocco, who are ranked 59th and also lost 2-0 to Costa Rica.
