The Digicel Fiji Young Kulas faced a 2-0 defeat against a solid Costa Rican team this morning as they prepare for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Costa Rica, currently ranked 42nd globally, gradually dominated the match, scoring the first goal in the 41st minute to lead 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Costa Rica added another goal from a corner kick, while the Young Kulas, ranked 72nd, found it difficult to create clear scoring chances. Fiji’s most promising opportunities came from set pieces, including a notable free kick that tested the Costa Rican defense.
Head coach Angeline Chua highlighted the significance of this match for the team’s growth. She stated, “Playing against Costa Rica provided us with a chance to experience a different style of play and helped us pinpoint areas needing improvement before the World Cup. Despite the outcome, the experience against high-quality opponents will be immensely beneficial for our players.”
The Young Kulas will now shift their attention to their upcoming friendly match against Morocco, ranked 59th, who also lost 2-0 to Costa Rica.
