Fiji’s Young Kulas Face Tough Lessons in Costa Rica Showdown

The Digicel Fiji Young Kulas faced a 2-0 loss against a well-organized Costa Rican team this morning, as part of their preparations for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Costa Rica, currently ranked 42nd in the world, took control of the match and managed to score the first goal in the 41st minute, leading 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Costa Rica extended their lead with another goal from a corner kick, while the Young Kulas, ranked 72nd, found it challenging to create clear scoring opportunities. Fiji’s most promising chances came from set pieces, including a notable free kick that put pressure on the Costa Rican defense.

Head coach Angeline Chua highlighted the match’s significance for the team’s growth. She stated, “Playing against Costa Rica allowed us to experience a different style of play and pinpoint areas for improvement ahead of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Despite the outcome, the experience against high-caliber opponents will greatly benefit our players.”

The Young Kulas will now shift their focus to their next friendly match against Morocco, ranked 59th, who also faced a 2-0 defeat against Costa Rica.
