The Fiji under-15 football team was warmly sent off in Ba as they prepare to compete in the OFC U15 Development Tournament in Wellington, New Zealand. The event is set to take place tomorrow, with sixteen talented young players representing Fiji on the international stage. Team captain Isoa Baselala expressed his pride in leading the squad, stating, “I’m honoured to lead the team on and off the field. It’s a huge honour and I’m thankful for the opportunity.”

However, the team faced an unfortunate setback as Adnaan Ahmad, one of the selected players, was dropped due to a recent recovery from dengue fever. Despite this, officials confirmed that he has recuperated well.

Head coach Marika Rodu emphasized the crucial role that parents play in their children’s development, both on and off the field. He noted the various social challenges that young individuals in Fiji currently face, particularly regarding the rising issue of drug abuse. “At this stage, the boys are still growing and they can be easily swayed. This is the time they need direction. Guide them to become better people,” Rodu advised.

Parent Kafoa Danford expressed gratitude towards the Fiji Football Association and coaching staff for their commitment to the players’ development.

The squad traveling to New Zealand includes: Noa Lovia, Darshil Raj, Penaia Steiner, Aaron Veitamani, Jone Loga, Gus Danford, Navitesh Kumar, Lekima Rokodragi, Isoa Baselala (captain), Shahil Prasad, Ayush Kumar, Elijah Rakabatia, Abhinav Ram, Zaman Shah, Rayyaan Mohammed, and Dikshit Bhan.

This commitment to youth sports not only enhances the players’ skills but also reflects Fiji’s broader aim of nurturing young athletes across different sports. As they embark on this journey, there is hope that these young athletes will excel and contribute to the growth of football in Fiji, providing a positive outlook for the nation’s future in sports.
