Fiji’s Young Football Star Ready to Shine on Home Soil

Sixteen-year-old Annie May, captain of the Fiji Women’s U-16 team, is filled with pride as she gets ready for her second appearance at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship taking place in Suva, Fiji. May feels honored and excited to lead her squad while playing in front of a supportive hometown crowd, including her family and friends.

“It’s an honor to be part of the squad and to captain the team. It’s amazing to represent the country with your mum, dad, and the home crowd watching,” said the native of Savusavu.

May emphasized the strong camaraderie among the team members, especially when facing challenges. “The girls are doing pretty well in camp. Whenever they feel homesick, we always come together and encourage each other,” she stated.

Reflecting on her journey in sports, May shared that her first love was rugby, a sport widely embraced in her community. “Growing up, I mostly watched rugby, but I realized I didn’t have the right physique to compete at that level, so I tried football, and it has been an incredible experience.”

The unwavering support from her family and village has been crucial in her sporting endeavors. “My mum and dad have always been supportive, as well as my village, grandparents, and friends,” May expressed, showing gratitude for the encouragement that has motivated her along the way.
