Cricket Fiji has engaged Australian high-performance coach Sanjiv Dubey to conduct a short-term training camp for the national Under-19 cricket team. This initiative is designed to prepare the team for the upcoming East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers scheduled to take place in Japan this April.
Dubey, who is in his third year working with Cricket Fiji, will lead training sessions that emphasize skill enhancement and holistic development. He is collaborating with local coaches to ensure the best environment for nurturing young talent. In comments made to SUNsports, Dubey highlighted the necessity of thorough preparation, stating, “We need to invest time and effort into our development if we want to advance beyond just participating in tournaments.”
The training camp kicked off at Albert Park in Suva on January 8 and will continue until January 25. Dubey aims to improve the players’ core skills methodically, recognizing that this is a gradual process. He is optimistic about the progress that can be made, expressing his vision for the young players to showcase professionalism in international competitions.
Importantly, the training camp is also open to interested female players currently participating in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition. This inclusive approach underscores Cricket Fiji’s commitment to promoting diversity within the sport, providing opportunities for all aspiring cricketers.
Overall, Dubey’s training initiative not only focuses on preparing the Under-19 team for imminent challenges but also paves the way for broader objectives in enhancing cricket’s profile in Fiji. By fostering a supportive environment that emphasizes skill development and inclusivity, Cricket Fiji is setting a promising course for the future of cricket in the region.
