Fiji’s under-19 cricket team is poised for action at the ICC East Asia-Pacific World Cup Division One Qualifier in Japan. Coach Sanjiv Dubey, alongside the 14-member squad, left the country brimming with confidence as they aim to secure a spot in the ICC U19 World Cup slated for Zimbabwe and Nigeria.
The squad, which features only four players from last year’s tour in Darwin, showcases a fresh mix of talent, with most players set to make their debut at this competitive level. Dubey expressed optimism about the team’s abilities, describing them as “young”, “talented”, and “hungry to do well”. The captain, Josateki Malani, is a seasoned player who contributed to Fiji’s previous qualifications, having been part of the team that placed second in Darwin.
Dubey emphasized the importance of self-belief as the team prepares to face host nation Japan tomorrow, followed by a match against Papua New Guinea on Saturday. “Fijians are known for their heart and belief. We may be underdogs, but we are going there to compete,” he noted, highlighting the team’s competitive spirit.
Preparation for this tournament began in January with a three-week training camp, during which the players focused on enhancing their skills and mental resilience. This systematic approach not only showcases the players’ dedication but also reflects a promising future for cricket in Fiji.
With the team’s commitment and support from local cricket communities, their participation in this qualifier could inspire many young athletes in the region and elevate the sport’s profile. The increased popularity of cricket in Fiji suggests that the future holds much promise for these young talents on the international stage.
