Members of the Fiji Under 15 Basketball team visited the State House on November 6th, where they presented their iTautau, a traditional Fijian gesture of respect, to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere. The President expressed his pride in the young athletes for representing Fiji at such an early age in the competitive world of basketball.
He acknowledged the significant challenges that lie ahead as the team prepares to travel to Australia for the upcoming Championships. “You are involved in a sport that is gaining global prominence. It’s encouraging to see young Fijians making their mark internationally, especially in the United States,” he noted.
Katonivere encouraged the athletes to draw on the training and support they have received from their coaches and parents, reminding them of their role as ambassadors for Fiji. He highlighted the importance of their participation not just in basketball, but as representatives of all sports in the country.
Furthermore, the President urged the team to maintain a balance between their sporting ambitions and their educational commitments. “It is a notable achievement to represent Fiji at such a young age, and I am confident you will perform well in Australia. Remember to play with passion and to play for Fiji,” he concluded.
This visit underscores the nation’s support for its young athletes and the importance of community and familial support in nurturing talents. As the team heads to Australia, there’s a sense of optimism surrounding their potential success and the broader impact they may have on inspiring future generations of athletes in Fiji.
