Fifteen-year-old Jayden Edward Yee experienced a remarkable milestone by representing Fiji at the FIBA U15 Oceania Championship 2024 in Australia last week. This achievement marks the culmination of six years of his dedication to basketball, a sport inspired by his brother, who encouraged him to take it up.
Jayden, a Year 9 student at Yat Sen Secondary School, expressed immense gratitude to his family for their unwavering support throughout his basketball journey. Reflecting on his inspiration, he credited his brother, stating, “My mother and brother made me take up basketball. My inspiration is my brother because when I was young, I used to watch him play.”
Competing with the Fiji U15 team was a thrilling yet challenging endeavor. The team displayed impressive talent by winning their initial two games against Guam and the Cook Islands. However, they faced formidable rivals in the quarterfinals, leading to a defeat against Samoa. Despite setbacks in the classification rounds against Tahiti, Jayden maintained a positive outlook. He noted, “Samoa players were faster, bigger, and more skilled, but I learned never to give up. Even if you’re down by many points, the most important thing is to enjoy the game.”
Jayden also expressed a desire to motivate other young Fijians to embrace basketball, highlighting the sport’s potential for personal growth and cultural exchange: “I want to encourage more children in Fiji to play basketball. It’s a growing sport, and it allows you to travel and meet new people.” His ambition to leave a lasting impact on Fijian basketball and inspire future athletes reflects his passion and dedication to the sport.
