Brieanna Rabakewa from Swami Vivekananda College delivered a stellar performance at the Coca-Cola Games, clinching the Gold medal in the Senior Girls Discus Throw (1kg) with an impressive throw of 41 meters. This achievement was part of the Fiji Finals, held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, where she demonstrated her skill and dedication.
Fellow competitors also showcased their talent, with 18-year-old Shanaina Deo from Suva Grammar School clinching the Silver medal, while the Bronze went to Lily Drekeni, 19, from Ratu Sukuna Memorial School. Rabakewa, reflecting on her journey, expressed her gratitude for her win and addressed the importance of mental health, stating, “It’s okay that you’re going through mental health. Treat yourself mentally, and that’s okay. You just got to pray about it and be grateful for everything.”
Having participated in the Coca-Cola Games since Year 9, Rabakewa highlighted her longstanding commitment to the discus event. As she is now in Year 12, she has set her sights on returning for one last competition next year. Her sentiments echo the resilience and determination exhibited by athletes across Fiji, a theme also supported by the recent performances of fellow competitors like Celestine Atalifo, who previously overcame pre-competition nerves to achieve a gold medal in the Sub-Junior Girls’ discus throw, and Loata Lewageena, who surpassed Rabakewa’s previous record in the intermediate girls’ discus throw.
The successes at the Coca-Cola Games illustrate the growing talent and achievements in Fiji’s youth athletics scene. With each event, young athletes inspire their peers and foster community pride, paving the way for a brighter future in sports within the region. The dedication shown by these athletes not only highlights individual accomplishments but also enhances the collective spirit of athletic excellence across Fiji.
This inspiration resonates well, creating a wave of optimism for future sporting endeavors, as young athletes work towards their dreams in the face of various challenges.
