The Fiji Primary School Athletics competition is set to be an exciting event, featuring a total of 142 events for both boys and girls, which includes 72 individual competitions and 18 relays.
Originally started in the mid-1980s, this significant event has evolved from a local competition in Suva to a national phenomenon, attracting participants from throughout Fiji. After its successful return in Lautoka last year following disruptions from Covid-19, the upcoming 2024 event is anticipated to bring even more enthusiasm and competitive energy.
This year’s competition will highlight the talents and commitment of young athletes ranging from under-9 to U14 age groups. Patrick Bower, President of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, emphasized the event’s esteemed nature, noting that trophies will be awarded to winners in individual age categories as well as overall champions.
Bower mentioned that the following districts have confirmed their participation: Suva one, Suva two, Nadi, Nadroga Navosa, Lautoka, Bua, Labasa, Macuata South, Vanuabalavu, and Ra. He also noted significant interest from Tailevu South, Northland, Serua Namosi, Lami, and even Wallis and Futuna.
He expressed gratitude to key supporters such as the Ministry of Education, Sportsworld, Jack’s of Fiji, RB Patel, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Fiji Sports Council for their crucial roles in making the event happen.
With preparations in full swing and excitement on the rise, the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Competition is poised to showcase remarkable young talent. The competition is scheduled to take place on October 28-29 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
