The recent eight-day athletics camp organized by the Fiji Sports Council serves as a pivotal moment for local athletes, emphasizing the importance of laying a strong foundation for the future. Athletics officer Bola Tafoou acknowledges the progress made, yet realistically states, “We are nowhere near Olympic level yet.” The primary goal of the camp is to cater to athletes who are relatively new to the sport, focusing on teaching essential skills in throws, jumps, endurance, and recovery.

Tafoou notes that many of the participants are beginners, and fostering fundamental abilities is crucial for their long-term development. He recognizes that while the camp has shown promising early results, Fiji still has a journey ahead in reaching Olympic standards. The focus of the training is on long-term development, incorporating both micro and macro training cycles to prevent athlete burnout while ensuring recovery is prioritized alongside training.

This camp marks only the beginning of an ongoing effort to enhance athletics in Fiji. Although the dream of competing on an Olympic stage seems far off, Tafoou believes that with dedication and hard work, athletes can be nurtured to perform on the world stage in the future. Key life skills such as discipline, time management, and perseverance are being instilled in the athletes, which will serve them well in all aspects of life, both on and off the track.

In essence, the camp symbolizes hope and commitment to the future of athletics in Fiji, demonstrating that every journey, no matter how long, begins with a single step. As these athletes continue to develop their skills, the prospect of future achievements in athletics becomes more attainable.
