The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has initiated an off-season athletics training camp, offering young athletes, especially those from smaller schools, a valuable opportunity to train during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou spearheaded this initiative, recognizing the talent among these students and the need for structured training to prevent injuries and improve performance in competitions.
Tafao’ou noted that during past events, he witnessed many athletes fainting due to inadequate fitness levels, prompting him to propose a training camp to the FSC management. The camp, which charges a nominal fee of $20 per week, began weeks before Christmas and has already attracted participation from about 35 students. It will run for six weeks and conclude on January 24, just ahead of the inter-house events scheduled for February.
Coaching at the camp is provided by experienced former athletes, including Olympian Albert Miler and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro, who focus on essential skills such as block starts and endurance running. Beyond physical training, participants are also developing crucial life skills, including discipline and time management. Many parents have reported positive changes in their children’s behavior and routines since they began attending the camp.
Tafao’ou emphasized the camp’s commitment to inclusivity, inviting all young athletes regardless of their backgrounds to join. He expressed optimism about the impact of the training camp, as many young athletes who were previously hesitant to compete now look forward to the inter-house competitions, feeling more prepared and confident.
In summary, the FSC off-season athletics training camp stands as a critical platform for nurturing talent among Fiji’s youth. With a strong focus on skill development, discipline, and community support, this initiative not only gears participants for imminent competitions but also fosters a supportive environment that can lead to long-term success in athletics. As these young athletes continue to engage in the program, the future of sports in Fiji appears promising, with the potential for cultivating champions both locally and internationally.
