Iliana Baleisakau, a 14-year-old athlete filled with determination and unwavering faith, is aiming to earn a medal at the Fiji Finals, taking place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Representing Vunisea Secondary School, Iliana will compete in both the 1500 and 3000 meters events, showcasing her skills as a long-distance runner.
Hailing from the village of Namuana and with maternal roots in Nabukelevu-i-ra on Kadavu Island, Iliana shared her unexpected journey to this prestigious competition. Initially, she thought she would only participate in events closer to home but found herself preparing for the Fiji Finals. “It was always about enduring the challenges I faced in training, but I have overcome those hurdles in order to prepare myself for the competition,” she explained.
Support from family and friends has been pivotal for Iliana, who recalled their encouraging words as she embarked on her journey. Recently participating in the Maritime Zone athletics competition, Vunisea Secondary School performed impressively, clinching the overall championship with a total of 20 gold, 10 silver, and 7 bronze medals. This collective achievement reflects not only the individual talents of athletes like Iliana but also the supportive environment fostered by their school and community.
Iliana’s story aligns with a broader trend seen among young athletes in Fiji, as they strive for excellence while supported by their schools.
