The Fiji Under-17 AFL team is filled with gratitude and excitement following their jersey presentation held at Calvary Temple Assemblies of God church in Samabula, Suva. The event, which took place after a church service, was a celebration of the teams’ official apparel, sponsored by Dynamic Xtreme Concept (DXC).
Loata Vakausausa, the talent academy manager and development officer for AFL Fiji, shared insights about the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2024 Pacific Cup. She noted the challenges faced in building the sport’s presence, starting with just six children in training sessions and now expanding to over 60 young athletes. Despite some initial hurdles, including players having to balance training with family and school commitments, Vakausausa praised the dedication and hard work displayed by the team.
The U17 teams will be trailblazers, being the first junior squads from Fiji to participate in the AFL tournament. While three teams will make the journey, Vakausausa expressed a desire for a senior women’s team, highlighting the need for growth and development within the sport. She emphasized the importance of community support, urging families and friends to continue their encouragement as the tournament approaches. Notably, nine students from Suva Grammar School will also be part of the national representation.
This presentation marks a significant milestone for AFL in Fiji and instills hope for the future growth of the sport. With increasing participation and community backing, the teams are poised for a promising showing at the Pacific Cup.
In summary, the Fiji U17 AFL teams are not only gearing up for a competitive tournament but also fostering a sense of unity and pride as they represent their nation on a larger platform.
