The Fiji men’s football team’s aspirations for qualification in the FIFA 2026 World Cup have faced a significant hurdle with the news that captain Roy Krishna will be sidelined for the semi-final of the Oceania play-offs against New Zealand, scheduled for March next year. Roy sustained a serious grade 3 ACL injury while competing in the Indian Super League for Odisha FC, which not only ends his season but also requires surgery and an extended rehabilitation period.
At 37, Roy has been a pivotal player for Fiji, scoring critical goals that secured the team’s place in the playoffs. He netted the solitary strike in a 1-0 victory against the Solomon Islands, contributed significantly with a goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Papua New Guinea, and once again found the back of the net in a crucial 1-1 draw against New Caledonia. Collectively, he has scored 44 international goals, making him a vital presence in the squad.
Despite this setback, Roy remains optimistic, explicitly stating that he understands injuries are part of the sport. He expressed disappointment in not being able to compete in such a significant match but has shown unwavering trust in his teammates and coaches. “I have complete faith in my team-mates and coaches. I know they’ll give it their all, and I’ll be cheering for them from the sidelines,” he remarked.
The team continues to rally behind its mission, looking to maintain their momentum despite the absence of their seasoned leader. The Fiji football community is hopeful that Roy’s recovery will be swift, allowing him to return to the pitch stronger than before. Odisha FC’s head coach, Sergio Lobera, also voiced support for Roy, mourning the loss of such a great talent and professional but expressing confidence in his eventual comeback.
In these challenging times, the spirit of resilience shines through the Fijian squad. While Roy’s absence will surely be felt, it also presents an opportunity for other players, such as Sairusi Nalaubu and Merrill Nand, to step up and showcase their abilities on this international stage. Ultimately, this challenge could strengthen the team as they prepare for their next match, inspiring the players to forge ahead with renewed determination.
