Fiji’s Work Permit Surge: A Closer Look at Labor Demand and Economic Growth

Between August 2023 and January 2025, a total of 6,460 work permits have been issued to foreign nationals in Fiji, according to Immigration Minister Viliame Naupoto. The data reveals that 4,819 permits were issued in 2024 alone, with 1,121 granted in January 2025.

These permits encompass various categories for employing foreign workers, indicating a robust demand for both skilled and unskilled labor within the country. The immigration minister emphasized that this surge in work permits mirrors the ongoing needs across several sectors, notably construction, which has seen significant employer participation.

Since the introduction of a new Document Management System in September 2024, the average processing time for work permits has been streamlined to 21 working days, assuming all necessary documentation is submitted correctly. However, processing times may be extended due to factors like case complexity, incomplete applications, or any delays in documentation submission.

This increased issuance of work permits demonstrates not only the economic expansion’s reliance on foreign labor but also the government’s commitment to making future improvements in work management systems. As the local job market continues to evolve, these developments will facilitate better employment opportunities for Fijians as well as expatriates, potentially enhancing the overall workforce quality in Fiji.
