The Minister of Youth and Sport, Jese Saukuru, assured that the Fiji women’s sevens team will receive strong support as they head into the upcoming Dubai Sevens tournament next weekend. This statement came during the presentation of the i-tatau at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.
Saukuru praised the significant growth of women’s rugby globally, referring to it as a remarkable success story with immense potential for expansion in the next decade. He highlighted initiatives like the new Women in Rugby brand and the motivational ‘Try and Stop Us’ campaign, which have contributed to a surge in female participation, reaching an unprecedented 2.7 million players globally. Since 2017, Fiji has seen a 28 percent increase in registered female players, illustrating a positive trend in the sport.
The Minister also acknowledged the historical challenges faced by women athletes in Fiji. Many have endured discouragement and even severe consequences for pursuing rugby, including social ostracism and physical punishment. Despite these obstacles, he commended their unwavering commitment and passion for the sport.
To further support this growth, Saukuru announced an allocation of over $4.2 million in the current budget aimed at fostering rugby in Fiji. This investment is intended to nurture talent and promote the sport across all levels.
As they prepare for the tournament, Saukuru reminded the team that the people of Fiji are behind them, stating, “You carry our hopes and dreams on your shoulders.” He encouraged them to keep pushing through challenges with the knowledge of the country’s unwavering support.
The Fijiana women’s sevens team is slated to depart for Dubai on Sunday, where they will compete in Pool A against Ireland, China, and Australia.
